COLLABORATIVE  PROJECTS

1.  Distribution  of mini kits for  establishment  of  nutritional  gardens in rural areas.  National  Horticulture Board Ministry  of  Agriculture, Government  of India has approved the project  "Establishment  of Nutritional Garden in Rural Areas" and released a grant in Aid  of Rs. 2.5 lakhs for the implementation of the scheme in Lakshadweep with the following objectives.

      a) To improve the nutritional status of the rural masses.

      b) To increase per  capita availability of fresh  vegetables  and fruits.

      c) Help in maintaining the ecological balance.

      d)  Utilisation of land and land around our dwelling  house, Panchayat community land etc by growing  fruits plants and seasonal vegetables.

     e) Increase the economic condition of the rural masses.

      f) Make availability of fresh fruits and vegetables through out  the year. 

    Families for distributing mini kits were identified in  consultation with Village Dweep  Panchayat in the respective islands.

        The  project proposal was to cover 1000 families  from  5 islands.

      Allocations of island wise targets were as follows.

           Kavaratti        200 families

          Andrott           200 families

          Minicoy          200 families

          Agatti             150 families

          Kiltan             150 families

     Minikit  containing  vegetable seeds fruit plants  coir  pith compost  and  Agrl.  implements were  supplied  to  the  selected families.

 Production recorded from the selected islands are given below:-

 2.  Supply of drinking water to saline affected areas.

    The  collaboration started in February 2000 with the  Village Dweep  Panchayat, Kiltan for supplying drinking water to  problem areas.   Now daily 25000 Litre of water (ground, rain water)  are supplied  for problem areas.  From last year onwards even  up  to the  southern tip of the island has been covered with  supply  of drinking water.
